MUSIC.
MADE SIMPLE.

Maybe you want to learn how to read music or play the piano. Maybe you need an exam tutor for an Advanced Placement (AP), ABRSM, IB, or RCM music theory exam.

Maybe you are a hip hop producer looking to inject melody and harmony into your beats. Or you’re a punk bassist who wants to play better basslines.

Perhaps you want to better understand the fundamentals of music (scales, chords, keys). Or you play metal guitar and want to write more complex riffs.

Or you’re a jazz saxophonist who wants to improvise killer solos.

Perhaps you want to learn sight-singing and hear intervals. Or you are looking for homeschool music lessons for your child.

You may be a singer/songwriter looking to make beautiful songs, tell a story, and craft an emotional journey using music.

Or maybe you’re a violin student simply looking for help with your theory homework.

Whoever you are, I can help you.

About Ethan

Picture
I have a PhD in music theory from the Eastman School of Music, one of the top music schools in the world.

I have hundreds of hours of experience teaching music in the classroom and one-on-one private tutoring (150+ students taught).

Fun fact: I even hosted a music theory AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit in which I answered over 200 questions, receiving over 7000 views.

How do lessons work?

Lessons are tailored to YOUR needs.

YOU choose the musical genres and artists.

YOU choose the difficulty level.

YOU choose how often we meet, and the lesson duration.

You will receive customized, graded homework assignments, tailored to your skill level, goals, and style of music (pop, jazz, classical, metal, electronic music, etc.). Sample assignment here.

You do NOT need to be able to read music.

You do NOT need to be a classical musician or a music student.

What can I teach you?

  • How to read music notation or play the piano
  • Fundamentals of music (scales, chords, keys, intervals)
  • Mixing, mastering, and music production in a DAW
  • How to make beats
  • How to DJ
  • Songwriting and composition
  • Jazz theory and improvisation
  • Ear training/aural skills (sight-singing and dictation)
  • Classical music theory and analysis, including the advanced college level

What should you expect from a lesson?

During lessons, we share a video/audio connection, and other tools include:
  • A virtual whiteboard that we can both view and edit in real time
  • A shared score that we can both view, edit, and hear in real time
  • Shared screen and audio for any music production or audio engineering lessons

Ethan has without a doubt changed the game for me...Ethan took my mixing skills to the next level via his 1 on 1 Skype sessions where I learned essential professional techniques for creating loudness while at the same time preserving dynamics. I learned far more from him than I could have anticipated. - Daggz, electronic producer
Ethan is a terrific music teacher. I've studied with him for close to a year and have transformed my understanding of classical music. He's well versed and is brilliant at breaking down complex theories and making them understandable. He's also very good with homework and emails me detailed assignments after the lessons. If you have a chance to study with him, go for it. - Wendy, poet & musician
Ethan is a great tutor who played an integral role in preparing me for my doctoral comprehensive exams in theory. His theoretical knowledge is vast, his analytical skills are sharp, and he has a way of making challenging material accessible. He communicates promptly and is very accommodating and flexible in terms of scheduling. Thanks to my work with Ethan, I passed my exam! I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking theory tutoring at any level. - Emily, doctoral voice student at the New England Conservatory
